July 23: Paper Sloyd

Paper Sloyd (PDF ebook) – Okay, I know what you’re thinking: What in the world is “sloyd”?

Well, the name Sloyd or Slöjd originally meant handy or skillful, and refers to the making of crafts – especially woodworking. Educational Sloyd’s purpose was formative in that it was thought that the benefits of woodworking in general education built the character of the child, encouraging moral behavior, greater intelligence, and industriousness. Sloyd had a noted impact on the early development of manual training, manual arts, industrial education and technical education.

“Paper Sloyd”, a fascinating early 1900s guidebook for primary grade teachers, takes this concept and applies it to paper folding and crafting projects for primary grade students. The result is a delightful collection of paper projects designed to develop mechanical and design skills, along with all of the above. While I’m not so sure these really encourage moral behavior, they ARE a lot of fun and will intrigue younger students for hours on end. Check it out!

July 17: Five Minute Mysteries

FIVE MINUTE MYSTERIES! (MP3 audios) - In these fast-paced little five minute programs, the scene is set… the crime is committed… and the clue to “who done it” is given. Your job is to match wits with the detectives and solve the mystery before they do! These hokey but fun little mysteries were originally syndicated to radio stations way back in the mid-1930s!

Parents Note: No violence is depicted in these three episodes, but all deal with crimes committed and solved by detectives. Although these are really “G” rated, If you are at all concerned about the appropriateness of these programs for little ears, please preview them first.
