Aug 27: When Mother Lets Us Cut Out Pictures

Our regularly scheduled resource (you subscribers know what I’m referring to) has been delayed because the publisher had a major problem with their download system. It has been bumped back a week or so. Sorry for the delay, but that sort of thing happens from time to time. In the meantime, we hope you’ll enjoy today’s great freebie! – Jim E

When Mother Lets Us Cut Out Pictures, by Ida E. Boyd (PDF ebook) – Well, I have a feeling it may be politically incorrect in this day and age to suggest that children get out the scissors and start cutting away, so forgive us today if scissor-work (with pointed scissors, yet!) is off limits in your family. Nevertheless, this wonderful gem from way back in 1918 deserves to be re-discovered, and some folks are really going to have fun with it. Written and “illustrated” (with cut out pictures, naturally) by Ida Boyd, a teacher of art at the Brooklyn School for Teachers, this crafty little guide offers all sorts of great advice for teaching your kids to use scissors and provides a multitude of fun and educational cut-out projects. Projects include cut-outs such as flowers, dishes, people, houses, fences, toys, whirli-gigs, Christmas scenes, and all sorts of everyday items that kids can pretend play with after cutting them out. What a great way to kindle the imagination, develop artistic and motor skills, and just have fun.

Here’s an excerpt that gives you the feel for how warm and gentle the tone of this text is:

“Let me whisper something to you…. When we are having a happy time ourselves, let us remember not to make any work for anyone else. Let us make mother glad because we never leave a scrap of paper on the floor. Little fingers, bright eyes, and loving children will be quick to help everybody, every time and everywhere. Shall we have that for our secret?”

I don’t know why, but I just love that.

Aug 26: The Pirate City, by R. M. Ballantyne

The Pirate City, by R. M. Ballantyne (PDF ebook) – Today’s freebie resource is this classic “living book”, provided by The Tutor (formerly Home Educator’s Tutor). Here’s their description of this fascinating classic:

“Captain Jack Sparrow has re-kindled interest in the world of pirates and the high seas but long before Sparrow’s adventures there were just as exciting stories about real pirates. During the early 1800s the Barbary pirates were one such group of real pirates. Their approach to piracy was very sophisticated and protected by the Monarchy of Morocco. As a result exotic locales such as Tunis , Tripoli and Algiers truly became pirate cities, bases of operations for these 19th century terrorists.

“The Pirate City is set at the time when the Barbary pirates were sailing freely around the Mediterranean Sea plundering ships from any nation that had not paid tribute to the monarchy. The story centers around a merchant and his sons and their harrowing adventures of being captured while on a trading voyage, being taken to Algiers, sold as slaves and return to freedom. It is told from a decidedly Christian worldview and portrays men of faith holding to their values in the most adverse circumstances.

“The author, R.M. Ballantyne went undercover in Algiers to research this book dressing and living as an Arab and its historical accuracy is beyond dispute. He also accurately captured major political and religious themes of those earlier days most are still with us making this book not only a good adventure read but geo-politically relevant to this very day.”

The Tutor is an educational supplement to help you implement a liberal (broad) education. The Tutor will provide you with the tools to expose your children to classical music, great artists, great literature, poetry, nature study, copywork, Shakespeare, orations, opera, Hymns and folksongs and more. For more information on The Tutor, click here
