Feb 18: Harriet Tubman & The Railway to Freedom

Harriet Tubman & the Railway to Freedom (MP3 audio) – Today’s resource is this classic old time radio dramatization of the story of Harriet Tubman and her work with the “underground railroad” during slave years. This excellent half hour audio program was originally broadcast on the radio series “Destination Freedom” way back on July 4, 1948. (Note: The sound quality on this program is quite good, but still not as clear as modern broadcasts.)

Feb 12: Abraham Lincoln Audios (MP3)

“Abraham Lincoln” (MP3 Audios) – Since today is the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (he was born just up the road from where we live, in a small log cabin on a hill in what was then the Kentucky wilderness), here are two great audio resources for you today:

First is Lincoln’s “Farewell Speech”, given in Springfield, IL before he left Illinois for his inauguration as President in Washington DC. This fine performance by Raymond Massey runs about 5 minutes.

Next is a great hour long radio dramatization about Lincoln’s presidency and the Civil War, originally broadcast on the Mercury Theater of the Air, way back in 1938. This is one of the best audio dramas about Lincoln from the golden age of old time radio, and is great “living history” that will especially be enjoyed by students who know something of Lincoln’s life. Enjoy!
