March 10: Carpentry For Boys

Carpentry For Boys by J. S. Zerbe (PDF ebook) – Classic introductory book on carpentry written for boys in 1914 — but great for anyone interested in learning more about woodworking. This heavily illustrated guide covers tools and how to use (and care for) them; how to design projects; types of woods; how to learn from your mistakes, and much more. Very well done!

From the introduction:
“Carpentry is the oldest of the arts, and it has been said that the knowledge necessary to make a good carpenter fits one for almost any trade or occupation requiring the use of tools. The hatchet, the saw, and the plane are the three primal implements of the carpenter. The value is in knowing how to use them…. This book to teach boys the primary requirements—not to generalize—but to show how to prepare and how to do the work; what tools and materials to use; and in what manner the tools used may be made most serviceable, and used most advantageously.”

March 4: Pen Pals as a Hobby

Pen Pals as a Hobby by Bonnie Jennings (PDF ebook) – Today’s resource is this very interesting new ebook written by a lady who once had 160 pen pals at the same time! Learn the ins and outs of “pen palling”, how to find pen pals, write interesting letters, stay organized, and much more. This newly released ebook sells elsewhere for $14.95, but is yours free today.

Note: This is an excellent ebook, but be aware that it was written for a general audience, and not specifically for homeschooled students. Therefore, there is little mention of parental supervision of correspondence or of any safety concerns. We think that a little common sense and parental involvement in this hobby would be sufficient in most cases, and most of this could be directed toward other homeschooled pen pals. Still, be aware that the “safety” aspect of this hobby is NOT covered in this ebook. If anyone knows of any links to resources specific to homeschooled kids and pen pals that would be helpful, please post them in the comments. Thanks!
