July 29: Raggedy Ann Stories

Raggedy Ann Stories by Johnny Gruelle (PDF ebook) – One day in 1914 writer and political cartoonist Johnny Gruelle gave his daughter Marcella a dusty, faceless rag doll found in the attic. Johnny drew a face on the doll and named her Raggedy Ann. Marcella played with the doll so much, Raggedy Ann became like a sister to her. Gruelle figured other children would like the doll as much too. Gruelle’s Raggedy Ann doll U.S. Patent 47,789 was dated September 7, 1915. Then, in 1918, the PF Volland Company published Raggedy Ann Stories – the first of many beloved books featuring Gruelle’s delightful stories of Raggedy Ann and her companions. These stories, accompanied by dozens of gorgeous full color illustrations, have been loved by generations of children. This is a true American classic. Enjoy!

July 21: When Mother Lets Us Sew

When Mother Lets Us Sew, by Virginia Ralston (PDF ebook) – Here’s a delightfully written and eminently practical little guide to basic hand sewing written back in 1910. This is filled with sweet illustrations and very well done step by step instructions for teaching basic stitches and sewing skills to little learners.

From the introduction:

Think how nice it would be, when mother is busy with her sewing and mending, to sit beside her on a little low chair and help her with that big sewing basket over-flowing with work! One could learn how to sew a button on brother Tom’s shirt, mend a tear neatly in little sister’s apron, thread mother’s needles… or even to cut out, sew and make all your own doll baby’s clothes! … Just to think of being able to dress and undress your little doll family as often as you like! One could even ame little night gowns for them to sleep in and best of all, everything they wore would be made by your own busy little hands….

July 20: Character Study Notebooking Pages

Today, courtesy of NotebookingPages.com comes this excellent notebooking pages set, subtitled “Sowing Seeds of Great Character… One Habit at a Time”. In this collection you’ll find a variety of delightfully illustrated themed pages that your children may use to record what they have learned about particular character traits. Publishers Ed & Debra Fogelbach explain: “We especially use the first three formatted pages to notebook specifics about the character trait (or seed) being studied that week. We record a definition of the trait. Then each child determines which habits and attitudes need to be “uprooted” or “weeded out” in order to give room for this character “seed” to grow. Then they list specific new habits that should be cultivated. (There are headings for each of these on the pages.) The second page gives them room to record what God’s Word says about this character trait and the third page gives them space to journal their response(s) to all they have learned.”

This is a great supplemental resource for any character building study, or for any discussion of character traits with your kids.
