Sept 21: The Soldier’s Pocket Bible

The Soldier’s Pocket Bible (also called Cromwell’s Soldier’s Bible) – Today’s resource is a fascinating piece of history brought to you courtesy of Trivium Pursuit.

The Soldier’s Pocket Bible is a booklet/tract that was first issued by Oliver Cromwell in 1643 during the English Civil War for the use of the Commonwealth Army. The little book consists of Bible passages, arranged topically, which might be of most help to a soldier. It was later re-issued in 1861 at the very beginning of the American Civil War, an exact reproduction (with only some spelling changes) of the 1643 edition. The quote on the title page, “Trust in the Lord and keep your powder dry,” was Oliver Cromwell’s famous battle cry to his troops.

This PDF consists of 4 – 8.5 X 11 pages which you can print out double-sided (making 2 pieces of paper printed on both sides). You can then cut the sheets width-wise and assemble to make a 16-page 4.25 X 5.5 folded booklet. The headings in the booklet are numbered to make it easier to assemble.

Sept 15: Their Rights and Nothing Less

Their Rights and Nothing Less (MP3 audio + PDF) – What a different world it was just a few generations ago, when women had few rights and a second-class status in many aspects of our society. Today, courtesy of our sister site HomeschoolRadioShows.com, we bring you this fascinating audio story of Susan B. Anthony.

Anthony was quite a controversial figure for some of her attitudes and beliefs, but her tireless work with the Women’s Suffrage movement of the early 20th century culminated with the passage (after her death) of the 19th Amendment and the right to vote for all women in the United States. This excellent living history” audio dramatization of her life, work and times was originally broadcast on the program “Inheritance” on March 27th, 1955.

Along with the audio program, we’ve also got a copy of one of our HomeschoolRadioShows “listening guides” this week to help in discussing this program and thinking through some of the topics it portrays. Enjoy!

Home Education by Charlotte Mason (PDF ebook) – Charlotte Mason (1841-1923) was an English educator who established schools to train governesses and parents how to teach their children at home.
