Nov 30: The Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party by Josephine Pollard & H. W. McVikar (PDF ebook) – Well, we are back from our Thanksgiving holiday (thanks for letting us take the break), and we have today, by popular request, a rerun of this wonderful old time picture book telling the story of the Boston Tea Party, which occurred in December of 1773, exactly 236 years ago! Yes, it is an old OLD book, originally published in 1812, but don’t let that fool you. This is a hugely enjoyable historical romp back to the events surrounding that milestone event in colonial America. Beautiful, witty illustrations and text in verse make this an absolutely delightful picture book your kids will truly enjoy – and learn a lot of history from, too!

Nov 13: Mary of Plymouth

Mary of Plymouth: A Story of the Pilgrim Settlement by James Otis (PDF ebook) – “My name is Mary, and I am setting down all these things about our people here in this new world, hoping some day to send my dear friend, Hannah, who lives in Scrooby, England, what may really come to be a story… even though the writer of it is only sixteen years old, having lived in Plymouth since the day our company landed from the Mayflower in 1620, more than eleven years ago…”

So begins this excellent book about the pilgrims and the colony of Plymouth, as told through the eyes of a young pilgrim girl named Mary. This classic “living book”, written by James Otis and originally published in 1910, is full of history, fascinating details about the daily lives of the pilgrims, along with plenty of action and adventure. Profusely illustrated and highly recommended! Another great story to share with your kids as we draw closer to our own Thanksgiving celebrations!

Nov 6: A Curious Hieroglyphick Bible for Young People (1790)

Update: Link has been fixed, sorry for the earlier glitch! – Jim E

A Curious Hieroglyphick Bible for Young People (PDF ebook) - Originally published way, way back in 1790, this is a fascinating little book meant to intrigue and teach young readers more about the scriptures. Each page contains a selected Bible verse, illustrated in picture rebus form. See if your kids can figure them out, and perhaps create their own “picture versions” of their own favorite verses. Also contains a few poems, prayers, questions & notes at the end of the book. A real historical treasure that shows us the kind of books children had over 200 years ago. This has been reprinted elsewhere for $24, but is free this weekend here at HomeschoolFreebieOfTheDay!
