March 12: More Peter Wheat Adventures!

MORE Adventures of PETER WHEAT! (Two PDF comic books) – PETER WHEAT and the folk of the wheat field return today with two more rollicking comic book adventures, written & illustrated by the great Walt Kelly (creator of "Pogo"). These little known 16 page comic books were originally published in 1950 as giveaways for local “Peter Wheat” bakeries. Though long “lost” and out of print, these contain some wonderfully exciting and fun adventures, and Kelly's marvelous artwork make them especially attractive to young readers.

Today we have two of them for you: In "The Chicken Hawk", the little ones in the barnyard are menaced by a predatory chicken hawk, who just won't give up… especially when a little chick named Chick falls into the river. And in "Danger in the Wheatfield", the evil bumblebee Wizard & his hornets plot to get rid of the folk of the wheatfield… by burning them out! Lots of exciting adventure and laughs in these… give them a read with your kids!

March 5: Tor, A Street Boy of Jerusalem

Tor, A Street Boy of Jerusalem (PDF ebook) – Today’s resource, courtesy of AmyPuetz.com, is this classic book by Florence Morse Kingsley (who also wrote “Titus, A Comrade of the Cross”). Tor was a poor boy who lived in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus. At the hands of Pilate he receives a wound that leaves him blind. Then one day, Tor hears shouts of ‘Hosanna!’ and Tor is taken to the temple where he meets Jesus. After Jesus heals his blindness, Tor becomes a follower of Christ. When Tor learns that Jesus is going to be betrayed, he tries frantically to save him.

Most of this excellent book takes place during the last week of Jesus life. Tor encounters many people that Scriptures tell us about, including Pilate’s wife, Peter, Judas, etc. This would be a wonderful story to read aloud during this season leading up to Easter. Regularly $4.95, it is free today here at HomeschoolFreebieOfTheDay! Enjoy!

March 1: “Simple Solutions 4 ADHD” Devotional

Simple Solutions 4 ADHD: Weekly Inspirational Thoughts for Parents and Teachers of ADHD Children (PDF ebook) – Today’s resource is this neat collection of 52 devotionals written by Dr. M. Russell Thomas, intended to provide inspiration and encouragement to parents and teachers working with children with attention disorders. Great practical advice blended in with short readings & quotes make this a fine resource for families dealing with this condition.

Dr. Thomas writes in the introduction to this collection:
I have worked as a psychologist for almost 30 years and have seen many people in my professional practice during that time. One group of people that has won the “Fortitude Award” in my mind is the parents and teachers of ADHD children. ADHD children are a beautiful group of kids whose energy, creativity and perpetual motion often present unique challenges to those around them. This booklet of quotes was uniquely assembled with the parents of these children in mind. The Weekly Inspirational Thoughts is based on my book Turbo Charged Childhood and each weekly thought is extracted from another of my books, Daily Inspirational Thoughts for Parents and Teachers of ADHD Children¸ which is scheduled for completion in mid-September of 2009. I ask that you to pay careful attention to the quotes which contain specific truths and inspiration about life with ADHD. Some are humorous while others bring us to tears; but in the end, it is my hope and belief that you will feel inspired and renewed in your resolve to parent (teach) your child.
