May 11: The Arithmetic Fairy

The Arithmetic Fairy by E. Nesbit (MP3 audiobook reading) – Today, courtesy of our sister site HomeschoolRadioShows.com, we have an Audiobook reading of this  fairy tale written by English writer E. Nesbit (author of "The Railway Children", "Five Childen and It"), which comes from her 1901 book "Nine Unlikely Tales for Children". Young Edwin is an English schoolboy who deplores his daily mathematics class assignment.  He wishes he could easily solve the problems he faces each day… and quite to his surprise, finds his wish is answered by the "Arithmetic Fairy".  However, as he soon finds out, these correct answers come at a very frustrating – and hilarious – price. This delightful story will appeal to any student who has struggled with math… or loves a good "fairy tale". A great audiobook reading by Cori Samuels! (23 minutes)

May 7: The Further Adventures of Peter Wheat!

The Further Adventures of Peter Wheat! (PDF comic books) - The little protector of the folks of the wheat field is back today with two more glorious fun cartoon adventures, written and illustrated by Walt Kelly! In "Peter and the Giant", the wizard causes trouble for Peter which leads to gigantic problems, to say the least. And in "Peter and the Dragon",  an underwater cave proves to be no refuge when the hornet knights send a dragon after Peter and his friends!

Written & illustrated by the great Walt Kelly (creator of "Pogo"), these little known 16 page comic books were originally published in the early 1950s as giveaways for local “Peter Wheat” bakeries. Though long “lost” and out of print, these contain some wonderfully exciting and fun adventures, and Kelly's marvelous artwork make them especially attractive to young readers.
