July 26: Tack’s Cartoon Tips for Aspiring Cartoonists

TACK'S CARTOONING TIPS for Aspiring Cartoonists (PDF ebook) – In 1923, cartoonist B. Knight, working under the monicker of "Tack", compiled a small collection of cartoon tips and examples for aspiring cartoonists in a small booklet called "Tack’s Cartoon Tips". This is a GREAT little book for your budding cartoonists to practice creating their own drawings, and would make an excellent series of simple cartoon art lessons. I know that several cartooning teachers have used this in the past to teach their students the basics of cartoon construction.

Note: We left out Plate 9, which was how to draw ethnic stereotype characters, not "PC" today, though that was a typical mainstay of cartooning in the early to mid 20th century. You'll still run across one or two innocuous examples of stereotype ethnic cartoon characters in the book as it is, so if that bothers you just take them as a reflection of the times when these were drawn.

July 23: We Hold These Truths

WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS (MP3 Audio) – One of the most famous radio programs of the WW2 era, by Norman Corwin – On the 150th anniversary of the
Constitution, this program relates the meaning of the Bill of Rights through history as well as through the eyes of average Americans… and how it affects us all. The Bill of Rights is the name by which the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution are known. They were introduced by James Madison to the First United States Congress in 1789 as a series of articles, and came into effect on December 15, 1791, when they had been ratified by three-fourths of the States. An agreement to create the Bill of Rights helped to secure ratification of the Constitution itself

A stirring, thought-provoking audio program, especially good for older students who care about United States history – excellent!
