A tip of the hat to Amanda Saum for pointing us to this great resource!

The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments (PDF ebook) – Here's a great Chemistry experiments book from the 1960s that was actually BANNED and removed from libraries across the country for being too "dangerous" for young experimenters. Much beloved and enjoyed by young baby boomer experimenters, apparently it was aimed just a bit above the heads of its intended audience as it included some advanced experiments considered hazardous by teachers and librarians. Even though most of the activities and experiments in this Golden Book are safe, a few will need parental supervision should you decide to persue them.
Our link to this resource has now expired, but If you'd like to read more about it, here's the original write up about this classic book found on About.com which lets you in on a bit of the history behind this classic children's book. (There are some tacky ads on the side of this linked page, sorry but that is beyond our control.) There is a download link to the PDF in this article. Note: the PDF file is 29 megs in size, this is a huge download which may take a while to get.
Thank you so much for a great resource and video.Susan
What an amazing find! Thank you for this little treasure. Gill.
I'm getting "This file has been damaged and cannot be repaired" when I try to open it.
The direct link is to the PDF on our server. There is also a download link to it in the article page. One or the other should work for you. Check our "Problems?" tab for other suggestions.

Too cool!!!! Whoa! Now how about the physics equivalent? Is there a Golden Book of Physics Experiments??? The oldies *are* the goodies to me!
This is great, even if you don't do the experiments, the profiles and history are a great read!
I am also getting "This file has been damaged and cannot be repaired" from the direct link to the PDF on your server. Has the download link been removed?
I was having probs with the damaged file. It started after I switched to Firefox. I figured out how to make it work. Rt click on the link and select "Save link as"…. It saves it directly to Adobe PDF for me. Hope it helps.
Kat, the file is fine both on our server and on the about.com site… but it is huge (23 megs) and likely you're getting a connection problem between your ISP and the server(s). See our "Problems?" tab and try re-downloading according to the instructions there.

I am sure my son will love working on these experiments with me. He loves chemical reactions!
I had the same error message as the others. The link from this website would not work at all.
I used the link from the About.com review page that was given then clicked the PDF link from there to get to the book.
During the download, I got a time-out message. That was quite strange as I'd never encountered it before and have an exceptionally quick cable Internet connection.
I used the Firefox web browser add-on "Download Helper" to solve the problem. When I used Download Helper, I was able to save the whole book on my harddrive without any errors.
Hope that helps some people. Note, this is a very large file at 27.9MB so if you're having complications, this could be part of the problem. I'd also recommend checking with your ISP to be sure there are not any restrictions on your downloads. If your'e over their limmit, you may experience some difficulties.
Thank you for this wonderful resource. I would also like to see if there's a version for Physics. I may even do a Google Books search later to see if I can find it.
Have a blessed day!
Thanks for the great resource! I love this book. We will be doing chemistry next year and this will certainly be a major resource for that.
thank you so much for the Chemistry Experiments book. my kids enjoyed the colourful illustrations and activities. cheers!
This will be perfect for integrating Chemistry in our Culinary Arts and other courses in our Homeschool Education Center!
Thank you! god bless. diane
Drat! Life got the better of me, and I MISSED IT! Will it be listed again, at a later stage? Thankyou.
