The Stephen Foster Story

Today we feature two excellent old time radio dramatizations about the American composer, Stephen Foster:

StephenFosterSongs of Stephen Foster: An American Legend

This excellent old time radio program relates how Foster’s music captured the heart and ideals of pre-Civil War America, and his influence on our culture today. It is both a songbook of Foster’s classic tunes, as well as a mini-biography of his tragic life. Included are several wonderful Foster compositions, including “Beautiful Dreamer” and “I Dream of Jeannie”. Highly recommended!

The Story Behind the Song: My Old Kentucky Home

Next, the story behind Stephen Foster’s classic song, “My Old Kentucky Home”. We especially enjoyed this program, as we live less than an hour from the real “My Old Kentucky Home” and have visited there many times. It is a magical place. We hope you’ll enjoy this touching, bittersweet story of the Old South too.

  1. Thank you so much for this resource – Kentucky is our "state of the week" next week and I cannot wait to use this!  Thanks for all you do getting us these great resources.

  2. Thanks! We visited KY two summers ago and went to see the outdoor production of "Stephen Foster: The Musical"  It was fantastic and I'm looking forward to learning more about him. I was really surprised at how many songs I was familiar with and that are attributed to him.
