April 22: Helping Your Child Learn Science

on April 22, 2009

Helping Your Child Learn Science (PDF ebook) - Every day is filled with opportunities to learn science—without expensive chemistry sets or books. Parents don’t need degrees in chemistry or physics to help their children learn science. All that is needed is a willingness to observe and learn with them, and, above all, to make an effort and take the time to nurture their natural curiosity. This booklet provides parents of children ages 3 through 10 with information, tools and activities they can use in the home and community to help their child develop an interest in the sciences and learn about the world around them.

This is a VERY nice beginning guide to science and scientific inquiry, with very good advice for parents, and loads of illustrations and activities for primary grades. Hey, it is even published by the US government – your tax dollars at work! Check it out!

From the introduction:

Why is the sky blue?
Why do things fall to the ground?
How do seeds grow?
What makes the sound and music?
Where do mountains come from?

Young children ask their parents hundreds of questions like these. In search of answers, we use science to both enlighten and delight. Being “scientific” involves being curious, observing, asking how things happen and learning how to find the answers. Curiosity is natural to children, but they need help understanding how to make sense of what they see and to relate their observations to their existing ideas and understandings….

I have always found Science fun. And even now my 2-1/2yr old is showing curiousity about the world around him (even tho he is still considered pre-verbal). I was given a science book many years ago, that I read thru and learned from (the kind used in elementary schools. When my son gets a little older, I will read him this PDF and that science book to help him understand any question he might have. They will compliment each other nicely. Thank you!
