Little Strummers

Little Strummers: A Guitar Course for Children Ages 6 – 10 (PDF ebook)

Back by popular demand! Today’s resource is this excellent beginner’s guide for young guitarists, by homeschool mom & part-time guitar teacher, Tara Tarbet. Tara created this starter guide to use with her own young guitar students, and has generously allowed us to share it with you here. (If you like this, please post a comment to let Tara know her work is appreciated!)

I’ve been looking at guitar tutorials for some time, hoping to find something that is geared specifically for young children just starting out, and to tell you the truth, this is the best resource I’ve seen yet. Simple tips and teaching suggestions, followed by a songbook of 20+ simple and familiar children’s songs (with even more tips at the bottom of each song). No drawn out instruction that is over the heads of little ones — just get in there and start playing. Great fun!

  1. Thank you for offering this book – my husband has been trying to teach the boys guitar…hopefully this will give him some added tools to make it a little easier.

    Blessings,
    Tammy

  2. Tara,
Thank you so much for sharing this. My son has been wanting to learn guitar for some time. The book we bought was so confusing I couldn’t understand it enough to explain it to him and lessons are not an option right now. After reading yours once I am understanding and making music myself so I know I can pass it on to him. What a blessing you are.

  4. Thank you so much for offering this book. We have been working for about a year to find a great beginners homeschool guitar book – WITH music. Very Cool. Much Appreciated!

  5. Here’s a hint that I didn’t put in the booklet but might be helpful to those of you who are teaching your children to play guitar.

If your child has a hard time remembering where to place their fingers for a chord, place small colored stickers (one color per chord) under the strings that their fingers should be on. Let your child use a matching highlighter to highlight the chords on the paper. If you use yellow stickers to indicate an “A” chord on the neck of the guitar, then have your child highlight all the “A” chords on their paper in yellow.

    Happy strumming!

  6. Thank you! I can’t wait to show my hubby & son, I hope they can use this to get strummin’ right away.

  7. Hello Tara – Thanks for the great resource! It looks well written and easy to understand even for this novice.

    Happy New Year!

  8. Thank you so much for this wonderful resource! My six-year-old son has been wanting to learn to play the guitar. I had searched, but had been unsuccessful in finding a curriculum geared for children his age. This is exactly what we needed. I showed him the curriculum and he is super excited about being able to really play some songs. Thank you!

  9. Wow! What a fabulous introduction to guitar for my little guys! My youngest received a guitar for Christmas, so this is just what we needed! Thank you so much Tara! You're a blessing!

  10. Thanks so much!  I am clueless about this stuff, but my 7 year old daughter wants to learn guitar, and I am hoping I can learn it too.  With this resource it looks like we should both be able to get a good start!  Thanks for sharing your gifts and talents.

  11. Excellent resource — thanks so much!  My 6-year-old son wants a guitar for Christmas, and this will be the perfect accompaniment.  Thanks again!!

  12. What a wonderful little book!  Not having any musical experience myself it is hard to help our children with music.  I am trying to learn on a little to be abel to help them better, and this is actually great for me : )

  13. Thank you so much!  This is something that will make my daughter smile.  She is learning to play and most of the songs in her songbook are unfamiliar to her.  This is perfect. 🙂

  14. The tips on holding it are great. I've never played guitar (piano, and wind instruments only) so I was excited to see this so I could help my kids learn to play. However, it then jumps into the first song, without telling how to actually play guitar – how do you make the different notes – where to push on the strings with the left hand and when to strum, etc ?? where can I learn the very basics, so we can use these songs? Thanks

  15. Thank you! the book was great. We love the compilation. Lord willing we would like to see compilation of christian songs. God bless in your ministry!

  16. Thanks for all the kind comments about my little guitar book! I am so glad it is helpful to so many people.
I have a few students who move even more slowly than the booklet does, so I am compiling a supplemental booklet with more easy songs. When I get it done, I'll pass it along to the Erskine family so they can share it.

  17. Thanks from a homeschoolmom from Belgium! When out daughter is a little bit older we will give this a try!
