The Adventures of PETER WHEAT! (Two PDF comic books) – Okay, get ready for something completely different! Today we want to introduce you to PETER WHEAT and the folk of the wheat field, beautifully drawn by the great Walt Kelly (creator of “Pogo”). These little known comics were originally published in 1950 as giveaways for local “Peter Wheat” bakeries. Though long “lost” and out of print, these contain some wonderfully exciting and fun adventures, and Kelly’s marvelous artwork make them especially attractive to young readers.
We’ve got two rollicking good stories for you today: In “Bitsy and the Beanstalk”, Peter’s little friend Bitsy has been hoodwinked by a sly fox… but brings home some magic beans that lead him straight to giant land. In “The River Adventure”, Peter and Sammy Sweet must ford the river to deliver flour to the bakers, but a hungry otter tries to make them his lunch!
Give these a chance and see what your kids think of these – we think they are going to become instant Peter Wheat fans! They are great for read alouds and for reading practice too.
Note: We know not everybody likes comic books, so this resource is a trial balloon to see if there is a good audience for some of these classic children’s comics from time to time on HomeschoolFreebieOfTheDay. So, if you like these, you need to post a comment and let us know. We need to hear from a bunch of you if you want to see more Peter Wheat!

Very cute little comics! A nice twist on the typical beanstalk story. Thank you!
These look really sweet, and I adore Walt Kelly anyway. Thank you!
My kids love to read the Sunday comics and comic books, so I look forward to sharing these with them, especially knowing the content is safe. Would love to see more! Thanks for all you do! This is one of my favorite websites. Thanks again!
I enjoyed the comics, and I’m sure my children will too. They like to draw comics, and maybe they would be able to come up with a new adventure for the wheat field folks. I say, keep them coming.
These are cute. Thank you, my boys love comic books.
I think these are great! I know my children will enjoy them & we’d love to see more.
Thanks for the book. My children will enjoy it.
LOVE them!!! Any more goodies like that out there? We are printing these off for the kiddos!
Yes, more comics! My girls LOVE comics, and they’re very helpful for little ones just learning to read. Older comics use delightful words that aren’t used so much anymore, too….great for vocabulary!
My children love comics, too (who doesn’t?), and I’m sure they’ll love these! We’d love to see more. We really appreciate all your hard work!
Love the comics! Thanks!
We would also love to see more of these. Thank you.
Keep ‘em coming! Thanks so much.
Thank you these are very cute.
Lovely
Great comics, we liked them a lot!
These are fun.
Thank you. I think these fit right in with lessons. It is nice to have a change.
Comics , or graphic novels, are great ways to encourage reluctant readers who are visual learners to read. How about more for older kids? Great!
Thank you for the diversion! We’d love to see more!
These are great. My children love comics, my son is a big fan of Prince Valient. More comics would be appreciated. Thanks for all you offer, your a blessing.
Adorable!!! I’d love to see more of this.
Reluctant readers and kids of all ages love comics–me too!
Thanks!
Thanks, We’ll enjoy these!
thanks! We like them!
Count us in as a family who’d love to see more. It’s hard to find comics/graphic novels that are safe for young boys who need a break from first readers and extra encouragement to read with something fun. Thanks for putting these up and asking for feedback!
I Love the Peter Wheat. My husband learned to read by reading commic books because he had problems which were not noticed till he was older. I all for anything that encourages our kids to read. Please send the rest of the books.
Ok, I’m either the voice of dissent or maybe because you really asked if people wanted to see more, maybe those who didn’t like aren’t posting….but this was NOT our cup of tea. Nothing offensive, but just not very interesting. I won’t be downloading any sequels, but an occasional day of your posting something we’re not interested wouldn’t hurt my feelings, lol. Just not weekly or something, that would make me sad to lose out on the good stuff you do post. Thanks for all that you share with us.
Thanks for the Peter Wheat comics. I have a reluctant reader who will enjoy these!
Send more comics, please! It is wonderful to have educational ones for my son to read – they draw him in and encourage him to read.
My two sons got to the end of it and laughed “the whole thing is a commercial for bread!” ” wish more “mercials” were like this. Any more mom?” So keep them coming. Was a fun treat and they were reading it!
One of my sons who was slow to learn to read REALLY took off when I put some trusted comics in his hands. He’s reading really well now, and all of our kids enjoy comics for a change. These look really cute! I know they will enjoy them.
These were fun. Perhaps a little scary for my 5 year old, but I think she will like them and my boy will too as he gets a bit older. Keep them coming!
We are 8 years old and we love them. We’d like to read more. They are really cool.
Thank you !!!!!!
Really fun! Keep them coming!
Delightful! Thanks! My son will love these. Looking forward to seeing more.
LOVE them! DH was a big comic collector in his younger days, and I like having good, clean options to XMen, et al, to share with our kids.
Thank you!!
These were great- keep them coming! Thanks!
These are cute, more would be great:-)
My son asks these to be read to him 3x a day since Friday. Peter White is on the same hero level as Lego Power Miners. We would love to enjoy more.
My two children, 4 and 2, LOVED these. I read both and they’re asking me to read them again right away. Please keep these coming!!!!
