Dec 29: When Mother Lets Us Cook

on December 29, 2008

This week, we are rerunning some favorite resources from 2008. NEW resources begin again next week!

When Mother Lets Us Cook: A book of simple receipts for little folk, with important cooking rules in rhyme, together with handy lists of the materials and utensils needed for the preparation of each dish (PDF ebook) – This delightful children’s cookbook from 1908 includes simple old fashioned recipes for meals, snacks, candy and more, memorable cooking tips in the form of rhymes, and lovely old fashioned illustrations. While you might not want to try all these recipes (people ate quite differently 100 years ago than they do now), there are still loads of recipes worth checking out here.

I love old cookbooks! I can find some of the best recipes in there, and it’s great to look back at how our grandparents and farther used to eat! No wonder they were so much thinner than we are today! There’s so little sugar in many of the old ones I’ve seen!

I love these old time cookbooks…I am homeschooling my dc and have been looking for alternatives to the current day cook books…they either want me to buy a cake mix instead of making it from scratch or they are not meals that an average person would eat. I look forward to more of your cookbooks.

I LOVE old books and adore old books for my kids. YES! We’d love to see more of these. Also, old cookbooks for teens and young adults would be a treasure! One of my daughters is past the “little child” level, is now a teen, and loves old recipes and learning the history of homemaking. Old Ettiquite books, hand craft books, hope chest books — anything to help prepare our daughters for their future roles as “mom and wife”. Also, anything for boys??

This book is “way fun!” It outlines the basics of cooking in a way that is easy to digest. We just happened to be studying writing instructional paragraphs and using order words (first, next, finally, and such) when this resource was posted–what great timing! Baking, cooking, History, English and Math all at once! :)
