July 23: Paper Sloyd

on July 23, 2008

Paper Sloyd (PDF ebook) – Okay, I know what you’re thinking: What in the world is “sloyd”?

Well, the name Sloyd or Slöjd originally meant handy or skillful, and refers to the making of crafts – especially woodworking. Educational Sloyd’s purpose was formative in that it was thought that the benefits of woodworking in general education built the character of the child, encouraging moral behavior, greater intelligence, and industriousness. Sloyd had a noted impact on the early development of manual training, manual arts, industrial education and technical education.

“Paper Sloyd”, a fascinating early 1900s guidebook for primary grade teachers, takes this concept and applies it to paper folding and crafting projects for primary grade students. The result is a delightful collection of paper projects designed to develop mechanical and design skills, along with all of the above. While I’m not so sure these really encourage moral behavior, they ARE a lot of fun and will intrigue younger students for hours on end. Check it out!

Thanks! This looks like a lot of fun!! I remember making a lot of different things with paper when I was in school & I had forgotten how to make some of the things, so this is a good reminder!! My boys should have a good time trying these out!!

I can’t wait to show this to my kids…they already spend hours making paper crowns, airplanes, dress up clothes. Thanks!

Should you ever decide to re-run this offer to download this “old book” for free, I do hope to catch it. This time I missed it. Our family had to be busy doing “other things” and could not download it. Will have to try to check on these offers better. Please let me know, though, should you decide to, very soon, offer this one again. Otherwise, I will try to have someone else in our house “catch” this one, if you offer it again! Did not want to miss it! ;o( God bless you! Thank you for making these great old books available, through giving away these free downloads! You are a blessing to us all, as we endeavour to educate our children using God’s old-fashioned value system! Mrs. Kathy Aprile
