The American Boy’s Book of Bugs, Butterflies & Beetles

on January 26, 2012

The American Boy’s Book of Bugs, Butterflies & BeetlesĀ  by Dan Beard (PDF ebook)

This is a truly wonderful guide book to the insect kingdom for inquisitive and “hands on” learners. Written in an extremely engaging style and chock full of illustrations and novel ideas for teaching (for instance chapter one compares the construction of a boy with the construction of a beetle) that will fascinate bug fans of all ages.

From theĀ  introduction:

Among the little folk of this world known as the insects, we find almost as many traits of character as we do among the human beings. We have the idle insects, the industrious insects, the warlike insects, the robber insects, the dead-beat insects, the stupid insects and the intelligent insects. We also have among them the low, degraded insects, dirty insects, clean insects, sluggish slow-moving insects, bright lively insects, useful insects and beautiful insects — all interesting and all of them in one way or another of vast importance to man. A study of their habits is not only a source of fun, but it is also most useful.
